Email newsletters to your clients, customers or contact list can be a great way to encourage repeat visits to your website, promote your services and make new sales. In my email newsletter campaigns for my clients, I’ve managed to obtain open rates as high as 72% – that’s more than three times the industry average!
Understanding Open Rates – What To Expect
What’s an “open rate”, you ask? It’s the number of people from your campaign who actually opened the email, out of the total number of people to whom you sent it. It’s almost impossible to achieve a 100% open rate, unless you send an email to two friends and make sure they both open it. The industry average open rate is 23%, which means that less than a quarter of the people you send an email campaign to
typically will actually open it. Open rates for email campaigns I operate for my clients generally range between 45% and 60%. Even my least successful newsletters are opened by twice as many people as the industry average! I’ve also achieved click rates (how many people click on links in the email campaign) as high as four times the industry average.
Is It Worth It?
Email newsletters are a great way to keep people coming back to your website. It’s a gently nudge to your customer or fan base to check out what new things are going on. It’s also a fairly inexpensive marketing method, which means you won’t break the bank. Adding a sign-up form to your website lets your audience do the work of building your list for you. Anything that helps keep your customers engaged with your project or business is worthwhile.
