Management
Between 1999 and 2007, Michael Mercadante designed and managed content for a number of traditional websites for various clients and projects. These were built using a combination of HTML and CSS techniques. Michael began working with content management systems in 2007, and soon after signed on to manage the online properties of The Philadelphia Zoo.
The Zoo’s website was built upon a custom CMS and contained thousands of pages at any moment. The content was constantly rotating as old pages were removed and new content was created. Most pages included photos or graphics in addition to written content. Launched in September 2007, the website was full of typos and inconsistencies when Michael took over three months later. Under his management, the website grew in size while becoming cleaner, more professional and easier to navigate, and soon earned more than one million annual visitors for the first time.
In addition to the Zoo’s site, Michael also began building websites for freelance clients using the open-source WordPress CMS. Today, he manages content on a number of customized WordPress websites, and has also created and runs a site using the open-source Drupal CMS for The Parkinson Council. Business Philosophy
I believe in ethical partnerships between myself and my customers. A lot of companies offering website design try to lock their clients into permanent relationships by taking ownership of domain names and controlling hosting space. I don’t agree with that business model.
You Retain Ownership
Whether I’m creating a website, logo, video or any other multimedia asset for you, you own the end result. If I build you a website, I’ll have you purchase your own domain name and contract your own hosting. Of course, I’ll walk you through the process with whatever help you need, but it’s important that you own your own space and property. I think of website management like landscaping: you own the property and the house, and you pay me to make everything look nice and work well for your needs.
